Budd Van Lines Deploys SwiftStack

Replicating data to off-site locations

Budd Van Lines, Inc., a provider of destination services, has chosen SwiftStack, Inc., a software defined cloud storage provider for the enterprise, to simplify how they store and manage data in a growing market with large incumbents.

With SwiftStack, the moving company can now manage their data, from videos to photos and documents, with uninterrupted scaling abilities, multi-geographic data distribution, and integration with their existing legacy systems.

As part of its DR plan after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Budd Van Lines needed more flexibility in how they managed and protected their data. As a first step, they wanted to move their data off local servers to centralized, regional storage servers that would ensure constant uptime and accessibility to information across the company. They decided on SwiftStack, whose cost-effective storage policies enabled them to replicate data to off-site locations, preventing data loss and downtime and giving them a competitive advantage against larger van lines. In less than six months, Budd Van Lines has integrated their existing storage services with SwiftStack and plan to open four additional SwiftStack storage regions across the US by the end of the year.

We initially wanted a storage solution for off-site data replication, so our workers could access information on-the-go and so we were protected for DR. To do this rapidly, we turned to SwiftStack,” said Doug Soltesz, VP of IT, Budd Van Lines. “The flexibility we’re given to manage, access and utilize our data is a complete game changer. Not only can we control how our storage is configured, but our storage systems can be consolidated, so it’s easier to manage and scale our data in a secure way that gives us advantages over competition.

Budd Van Lines is also in the process of implementing a paperless mobile system for data capture to support their largely mobile and very distributed workforce. Using SwiftStack’s Filesystem Gateway innovation, they are able to link their file-based document management tool, Docuware, with their storage system, which will enable workers to upload data directly from their tablets to the centralized storage system.

With SwiftStack’s Filesystem Gateway, we can finally bridge the gap between object storage and other storage systems used internally,” Soltesz continued. “We have security videos in all warehouses and camera in all our trucks for quality assurance purposes, and those files can now be easily synced and shared to our central storage system. Our field workers can now input data directly into our centralized storage system and access it from anywhere, moving us closer to our goal of ultimately implementing a paperless tablet mobile system for them.

Our goal is to make the enterprise storage equation simple,” said Joe Arnold, CEO, SwiftStack. “We enable our customers to keep up with the massive scale of data and access points required by users in a cost-effective way. By investing in SwiftStack object storage, Budd Van Lines is disrupting how data is utilized and managed in the trucking and moving industry.
