Streem (Greply Inc.) is a start-up file sharing service that separates itself by allowing users to store files only in the cloud without the need for onsite file syncing.
Streem’s secret sauce is that the service allows users to store large files such as large hundred gigabyte video files in the cloud. Instead of making the user wait to download the entire video; the video can be streamed on demand as it downloads in the background. Streem’s innovation doesn’t stop there. Streem also invented StreemFS that integrates into the OS in order to function as if it were a drive connected to the machine.
In April, it was reported that Streem was offering unlimited cloud storage for the price of $20 per month.
With such robust features coupled alongside cutting edge algorithms and compression methodology, it’s easy to see why Box, Inc. was so eager to snag up Streem.
Box CEO Aaron Levie welcomes the Streem team aboard on the box blog by saying: “The entire team at Streem will be joining Box to help work on the future of content management and collaboration in the enterprise.“
While Streem’s target audience may have originally focused on those who wanted to access rich media in the cloud without filing up their local HDD, Box saw additional potential in the start-ups capabilities.
Levie comments: “For customers across data-intensive industries like media and entertainment, oil and gas, healthcare, and manufacturing, this means instant access to far larger volumes of data than what your local drives can support. For enterprises in regulated industries like life sciences and financial services, it means better protection and control of information and where it lives. While no specific timeline is set for when you’ll see Streem’s various technologies incorporated into Box, we’re excited to work with the team to rapidly make this happen.“
