Only News on NAND Flash

Controllers, SSDs, systems and patents

We got a lot of news around NAND flash technology these past days and decide to gather them today.

They concern software, duplicators, controllers, internal and external solid-state disks, all-flash and hybrid systems, and also the market, some patents and even a patent infringement on the subject.

We could never do such a special daily report on the most competitive product for SSD: hard disk drive. Since the beginning of 2014, only four new HDDs have been released, Toshiba 5TB and Seagate 6TB 7,200rpm units, and two 600GB 15,000rpm devices by HGST and Toshiba. In the same time, 40 SSDs, embedded or not – but not including memory cards or flash keys – have been announced.

More than that, now SSDs are beating HDDs in term of capacity surpassing 6TB, being a maximum for the rotating devices, at companies including Foremay, Fusion-io, HGST/Virident and OCZ, but at higher prices/GB.

There is much more activity on NAND flash than on magnetic technology and there is no reason to see this trend slowing down as chip density, interfaces, controllers are evolving and prices declining much faster for silicon-based devices.

About all the market reports also confirm that the number of HDDs shipped are stable or modestly declining and SSDs in smaller quantity but booming.
