HGST 6TB Ultrastar He6 Available in Most Aberdeen Products

Aberdeen LLC announced its broad implementation of the world’s first hermetically sealed, helium HDD, the 6TB Ultrastar He6, for massive scale-out environments.

Why did HGST replace air with helium?
With helium, storage capacity can be greatly increased while reducing the turbulence caused by the spinning disk. This reduces the power consumption, resulting in a lower temperature within the disk drive. The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows a seven-disk design in the traditional 3.5-inch form factor. In addition to being the world’s first helium-filled HDD, the Ultrastar He6 offers 6TB capacity. This design delivers a 50% capacity gain while reducing the drive’s energy consumption by up to 23%.
