Integration of Scality Ring and SGI Data Migration Facility

Scality, Inc. announced the integration between its RING and SGI DMF (Data Migration Facility).

SGI DMF is a policy based virtualization environment that enables multi-tiering across different types of storage, including cloud, object, disk and tape and is in use in markets such as big data and media and entertainment.

The two compnies have integrated DMF and the RING using Scality’s object APIs. DMF benefits from the power of the RING’s parallel access to boost data transfer. Using the combined solution, IT organizations will be able to migrate massive volumes of data at wire speed thanks to the RING’s massively parallel architecture. Multiple production sites can share data with remote, secure sites using SGI DMF and the RING’s multi-geo capabilities.

Scality and SGI integration represents the first industry deployment of DMF on an object storage platform.

“Scality RING is the perfect companion to SGI DMF and provides a large, resilient and fast tier two storage for inactive data. The combination of Scality RING and SGI DMF allows users to manage the cost of storage throughout the data lifecycle. Policy-based tiering can assign data automatically to different storage tiers based on cost and utilization criteria, while maintaining seamless access, reducing the cost of high volume storage,” said Philippe Nicolas, director of product strategy, Scality.

And DMF assists in the migration of older legacy data formats such as tape to newer storage formats.

DMF is a high performance data tiering product that can attain even greater performance when coupled with Scality’s RING,” said Floyd Christofferson, director of product marketing, SGI.
