24 Million External HDDs Shipped in 2013 in EMEA – Futuresource Consulting

This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 21, 2014 at 2:49 pmThe external HDD drive (EXT HDD) market in EMEA is on the rise again, posting its largest quarter since Q3 2011 in Q4 2013, according to the quarterly EXT HDD report from Futuresource Consulting Ltd..
“Across the 17 countries we track in the EMEA region, 6.8 million EXT HDDs were shipped in Q4 2013, equating to year-on-year growth of 1.8%,” says Mats Larsson, senior market analyst, Futuresource Consulting. “Taking last year as a whole the picture is even more positive, with 23.6 million units shipped and year-on-year growth of 9.8%. However, this still lags behind 2010, when we recorded shipments of 28 million units.
“The portable drive segment is pushing market growth, taking share from all other form factors, rising from 75% of the total market in 2012, to 82% last year reflecting the larger capacities available in 2.5″ drives and the continuing shift to mobile computing.“
Vendor Shares
The top three vendors – in descending order: Western Digital, Toshiba and Seagate – continue to wrestle share over smaller competitors, accounting for 80% of the market between them in 2013, up from 72% in 2012.
