Mpstor With VMware VMDK Version of Orkestra IaaS OpenStack Software Platform

Creates multiple clouds, LUN snapshots, thin provisioning, replication, etc.

Offering public or private cloud operators choice in the provisioning and management of enterprise applications, MPSTOR Ltd. announced a VMware VMDK version of its Orkestra IaaS platform based on the open-source OS OpenStack.

The company developed the cloud management platform to make datacenter infrastructure invisible, programmable and available to end users, allowing them to self-serve the exact quantity and quality of storage, networking and computing resources required for their applications.

Because the platform includes its own scale out software defined storage controller and storage array management, it has the ability to provision all the storage consumers in the datacenter from all the managed storage providers. The storage consumers can be VMware or OpenStack VMs, data centric services or individual physical nodes. It enables a VMware datacenter operator running the Orkestra IaaS VMDK platform to enhance their existing VMware installations and provide users with an OpenStack based cloud and self-service dashboard while maintaining their existing VMware infrastructure.

The ability to create multiple single or multi-tenant clouds and partition resources in large scale configurations with an OpenStack environment can reduce capital and operating expenditures. Cloud computing operators can also benefit from Orkestra IaaS’s advanced storage management and storage virtualization features such as LUN SnapShot, thin provisioning, replication, backup from LUN to S3 object, as well as provisioning scale out block, file and object stores.

We were able to save significant capital and operating expenses and avoid vendor lock-in while simply migrating our existing infrastructure onto the open platform using MPSTOR’s VMDK version of Orkestra IaaS,” said Christian Sestu, CTO of cloud resources, Filippetti S.p.A, a provider of cloud computing and IT solutions in Italy.  “It was simple to install and runs seamlessly on top of our existing VMware.

The storage management and storage virtualization capability and the server virtualization capability of OpenStack, produces a software defined cloud platform. It can be downloaded as a single bootable image and installed on bare metal servers in less than five minutes. It is supplied with an image vault, containing a range of pre-configured VM images, as well as with an integrated, web-based, GUI, which provides a range of configuration, administration and end user functionality.

MPSTOR’s Orkestra VMDK is the ultimate software solution for augmenting VMware,” said William Oppermann, CEO, MPSTOR. “It brings in a single package, OpenStack, Software Defined Storage and Storage Array Management to the VMware environment.
