Emulex Adapters for IBM System x

The Emulex Dual Port 10 GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr for IBM System x (00D8540), and the Dual Port 10 GbE SFP+ Embedded VFA IIIr for IBM System x (00Y7730) are high-performance, dual-port network adapters for 10GbE networks.

They are available as optional 10GbE adapters, or as optional embedded (mezz) 10GbE technology for selected System x models. The 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr offers the benefits and flexibility of I/O convergence with a single end-to-end solution. An optional software license will upgrade the base adapter to include FCoE and iSCSI Hardware Acceleration.

Features:

10GB Performance. The 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr product family for System x achieves line rate 10Gb/s performance with support for TCP/IP stateless offloads and TCP Chimney Offload. TCP Chimney Offload reduces system processor utilization, provides increased system performance and reduces overall system power requirements.
One adapter to manage all workloads. The 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr product family for System x are based on the Emulex OneConnect Universal Converged Network Adapter (UCNA) platform, which also includes support for FCoE protocol offloads when upgraded with an optional software license. By using a common infrastructure for Ethernet and storage networks, data centers can reduce CapEx for adapters, switches and cables, and OpEx for power, cooling, and IT administration.
Optimized for virtualization. The 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr product family for System x offers the benefits and flexibility of an exclusive enhanced virtual NIC (vNIC) function, which enables bidirectional bandwidth management, dynamic bandwidth allocation, and I/O convergence in a single end-to-end solution in partnership with IBM’s networking division. Each port on the 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter IIIr card can support up to four vNICs per physical port.
Greener data centers. The OneConnect UCNA platform delivers performance and scalability per watt, reducing requirements for power and cooling. Protocol offload enables efficient use of computing resources, supports more VMs per CPU, and reduces the number of servers required to support data center demands.

The Emulex VFA III/IIIr FCoE/iSCSI licenses for System x enable convergence of FCoE protocol with standard Ethernet traffic. By using the virtual fabric aspects, the 10GbE interface can be partitioned into four logical NIC interfaces running Ethernet traffic, or the port can be assigned to transmit FCoE or iSCSI. This consolidates the traffic of three types of protocols onto a single adapter.
