Sakura Internet Cloud Datacenter Customer of Amplidata

1.3PB for cloud archiving, backup, and content delivery services

Amplidata NV, in object-based software-defined storage, announced that Sakura Internet has deployed an initial 1.3 PB object store using AmpliStor storage software based on a reference architecture from Intel Corporation, Amplidata, and Quanta QCT.

As the adoption of cloud computing soars in Japan, Osaka-based ISP Sakura Internet is delivering a growing range of cloud services aimed primarily at SMBs and software developers. Sakura’s customers increasingly require cloud storage services that support archiving, and content delivery for large amounts of unstructured data.

The company found that storage based on AmpliStor software offered greater storage efficiency and cost savings compared to traditional data-protection schemes such as RAID and triple replication. In testing, the scale-out storage system transferred data up to 3x faster than a competing cloud service. The dense object store requires 43% less disk capacity for the same volume of data than traditional data-storage methods, with corresponding savings in infrastructure, floor space, and power and cooling costs.

AmpliStor is optimized for the newest Xeon processors that power the Quanta STRATOS dense storage server, and HPC server to deliver an efficient storage infrastructure.

Sakura Internet has built a highly efficient cloud computing data center, the first of its kind in Japan and one of the most energy efficient in the world,” said Katsuyuki Ikeda, Sakura Internet’s director of new business development. “The object store based on AmpliStor software offers high levels of efficiency and performance while enabling Sakura to quickly expand capacity while adding critical DR protection across multiple data center locations.

AmpliStor was designed from the ground up for cloud-scale storage implementations like Sakura Internet,” said Wim De Wispelaere, CTO, Amplidata.

AmpliStor’s BitSpread erasure coding builds more intelligence into the storage system, taking advantage of the performance and rich instructions provided by Intel processors to achieve benefits of reduced capacity, extreme throughput and scalability.
