HP Data Protector 8.1
Focus around prioritization, prediction, recommendation and automation
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on November 28, 2013 at 2:59 pmHP Autonomy unveiled HP Data Protector 8.1, an adaptive, dynamic backup and recovery software solution.
The solution upends the traditional backup and recovery model by delivering an approach that improves business resiliency, continuity and uptime. It leverages real-time operational analytics and defined business requirements to monitor, adapt and optimize how an organization manages its storage infrastructure, resources and data policies.
“Today’s release marks the end of backup as we know it,” said David Jones, GM, data protection, HP Autonomy. “HP Data Protector delivers the industry’s first self-aware, self-healing and self-managing solution that will transform how forward-thinking organizations power and protect the modern data center.”
Designed for the information era
For data-driven organizations, loss of information-even for a short time-can have catastrophic consequences. Without accessible information, organizations cannot function properly. They fail to meet SLAs; pay heavy penalties for missed production, service deliveries or regulatory noncompliance; and erode the confidence of their customers.
However, the task of ensuring continuous data availability has become challenging, and traditional technologies have failed to keep pace with the changes taking place inside and outside the enterprise. IT managers have witnessed a surge in data volumes, resulting in unsustainable storage requirements and costs. An explosion of data also is taking place at the ‘edge’ – on smartphones, tablets and hybrid devices – and 63% of organizations have no endpoint data protection in place.
Finally, the transition to virtualization and the cloud has left organizations with a hybrid environment that often lacks a backup strategy.
This addresses these challenges by transforming backup from a commoditized, ‘set it and forget it’ technology into a solution at the very core of an organizations’ data center and business strategy.
Developing a class of data protection solutions
The solution forms the foundation of HP’s long-term vision to deliver a class of adaptive backup solutions that consist of four components:
- Prioritization-enables organizations to set backup strategy and policies based on data and application priority and criticality.
- Prediction-leverages operational analytics to proactively set backup resource utilization.
- Recommendation-provides actionable suggestions to the IT manager to reduce potential conflicts and ensure SLA objectives.
- Automation-enables automated backup and recovery provisioning adjustments based on operational analytics from a self-learning system.
It also includes enhancements designed to provide greater intelligence and interoperability with enterprise platforms:
- SAP HANA integration-provides backup and recovery to SAP HANA in-memory databases, recreates logs while the database is online, and restores data and performs database recovery to a state at the specific point in time or the most recent restorable state.
- DR enhancements include object selection methods, restore options and wizard pages streamline and automate DR process.
- Integration with HP StoreOnce and 3PAR StoreServ includes HP StoreOnce compression delivering efficiency, encryption and instant recovery support.
- Priority-based scheduler-enables enterprises to backup application data based on an organization’s business requirements.
- Platform integration-includes integration with Microsoft Active Directory and VMware vCenter 5.5 for single item recovery, and certification of both vSphere 5.5 and vCloud Director 5.5. It also features platform certifications, such as application agent support for SharePoint 2013 and DB2 10.5, disk agent support for Debian 7.0 and AIX 64 bit, and media agent support for AIX 64 bit and Solaris 11.1.
HP Data Protector 8.1 is expected to be available in January 2014.
