New Software for NEC Enhancing HYDRAstor Scale-out Grid Storage
Maximum performance of 1PB/hour with 165 nodes
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 22, 2013 at 2:16 pmNEC Corporation of America (NEC) announced enhancements to its HYDRAstor OpenStorage Express I/O functionality, facilitating remote backup and increasing maximum performance by 13% to 6.3TB/hr per hybrid node and up to 1PB/hour for the latest-generation HS8-4000 storage system with 165 nodes.
The new HYDRAstor 4.1 software release is also available for previous generations of HYDRAstor nodes, with up to 26% improvement in maximum performance for third-generation HS8-3000 storage systems with Express I/O.
The Express I/O enhancements enable consolidation of backup from remote offices directly to the data center and also improve local backup performance for compressible workloads.
These enhancements include
Compressed Transfer, Secure Transfer and Multi-lane Transfer:
- Compressed Transfer compresses data on the media server and reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred across the wire, enabling direct backup from remote offices to HYDRAstor at the data center and higher performance.
- Secure Transfer encrypts the data on the media server and ensures the data is protected during transfer to the data center.
- Multi-lane Transfer facilitates multi-port load balancing across subnets to enable maximum performance with fewer media servers.
“The total worldwide PBBA market continues to outpace the external disk storage market in revenue, capacity, and shipments growth year over year,” said Robert Amatruda, research director, data protection and recovery, IDC. “NEC’s HYDRAstor storage system delivers a turnkey enterprise PBBA solution that addresses customers’ needs and alleviates their backup and recovery challenges by providing customers remote backup capability along with high throughput and capacity scale-out architecture.”
Compressed Transfer also enables higher performance for local compressible workloads, which can improve maximum performance by 13% for HS8-4000 and by 26% for HS8-3000.
Improvements for HS8-4000 include:
- Maximum throughput per hybrid node from 5.6TB/hour to 6.3TB/hour
- Maximum system throughput (165 hybrid nodes) from 921TB/hour to 1.04PB/hour
Improvements for HS8-3000 include:
- Maximum throughput per accelerator node from 3.2TB/hour to 4.0TB/hour
- Maximum system throughput (199 accelerator nodes) from 312 TB/hour to 392 TB/hour
“With the new Express I/O Compressed Transfer, HYDRAstor customers can reduce network bandwidth requirements for remote backups and achieve even higher performance for compressible workloads,” said Gideon Senderov, director of advanced storage, NEC Corporation of America. “We will continue to respond to our customers’ needs and deliver new innovations that improve efficiency and maximize the value that HYDRAstor delivers for enterprise environments.”
The Express I/O enhancements are part of HYDRAstor’s Express I/O license, and it is available for all existing customers with Express I/O licenses at no additional cost.
