Blancco SSD Erasure With Freeze Lock Removal

Patent-pending technology tested by Stellar Data Recovery

Data erasure provider breaks through the freeze lock barrier and offers patent-pending and third-party tested method for sanitizing SSDs.

Gaining in popularity for applications ranging from tablets to mass storage, SSDs are predicted to make up 40% of the HDD market by 2016, yet challenges have persisted with secure erasure of data from complex flash-based SSD memory.

Blancco Oy. Ltd. announced a discovery in the erasure of SSDs with the addition of automated freeze lock removal, a feature that opens access to firmware-based erasure commands in SSDs.

The first of its kind in the commercial erasure industry, the automated freeze lock removal feature in the company’s software will be of interest to IT asset disposal specialists, recyclers and businesses that value security in data erasure processes. The removal of freeze locks automates the sanitization of SSDs to meet regulatory compliance and also eliminates the need for manual intervention in the erasure processes.

Organizations that fail to properly manage data erasure for technically-sophisticated SSDs may unknowingly expose themselves to security risks, as traditional HDD erasure methods often aren’t effective for SSDs,” said Kim Väisänen, CEO and co-founder, Blancco. “With our major breakthrough in freeze lock removal, coupled with our unique SSD erasure process, Blancco offers the best method for achieving complete security and compliance.

The erasure method is patent pending and has been tested and verified by Stellar Data Recovery, Inc. an independent third-party and global leader in data recovery technology. Stellar performed low-level and invasive testing, while the company has also sought further endorsement through completion of the SSD test methodology offered by the Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance.

We tested Blancco’s SSD erasure method by attempting to retrieve wiped customer data from a range of SSDs,” stated Kees Jan Meerman, MD, Stellar Data Recovery. “A month of deep level invasive tests on each individual NAND resulted in no trace of customer data being recovered from any of the wiped drives.”
