IBM PowerVM V2.2.3 With Storage Pool Enhancements

Mirroring, dynamic contraction and disk growth, scaling

IBM Power Systems servers coupled with PowerVM technology are designed to help clients build a dynamic infrastructure, helping to reduce costs, manage risk, and improve service levels.

Among the improvements, Shared Storage Pools have been enhanced with the following:

  • Mirroring of the storage pool
  • Dynamic contraction of the storage pool
  • Dynamic disk growth within the storage pool
  • Scaling improvements

PowerVM V2.2.3, which delivers industrial-strength virtualization for IBM AIX , IBM i, and Linux environments on POWER processor-based systems, has been enhanced with the following:

  • Shared Storage Pools have been enhanced to help improve flexibility, scalability, and resiliency. These improvements include mirroring of the storage pool, dynamic contraction of the storage pool, dynamic disk growth within the storage pool, and scaling improvements.
  • Live Partition Mobility performance has been enhanced, giving clients more business flexibility by allowing workloads to move faster between servers.
  • The Virtual I/O Server’s Performance Advisor has been enhanced to provide support for NPIV and FC, Virtual Networking and Shared Ethernet Adapter, and Shared Storage Pool configurations.
  • The PowerVM Enterprise Edition now includes PowerVP, a new graphical monitor that provides intelligence to understand the mapping of virtualized workloads to physical hardware. This allows Power virtualized systems to be optimized and monitored to pinpoint performance bottlenecks.
  • Simplified Shared Ethernet Adapter Failover configuration setup. This simplification removes the requirement to configure a control channel for redundant shared Ethernet adapters and has a prerequisite on firmware 7.8, or higher, which is available on selected Power Systems. (for further details of supported machine model types)
  • Shared Ethernet Adapter changes include the enablement of the largesend attribute of Shared Ethernet Adapter by default, and two new device attributes to manage Shared Ethernet Adapter Failover behavior.
  • Improved virtual Ethernet link status reporting.
