SAIC-Frederick Selects FileTek StorHouse

As tiered storage for genomics data

FileTek, Inc.
announced that the SAIC-Frederick,
Inc.
has selected a StorHouse data management system to be the key
component of a tiered storage strategy for vital cancer
research data.

SAIC-Frederick operates the Frederick National
Laboratory for Cancer Research, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, part of the US National Institutes of Health.

SAIC-Frederick is the operations contractor at the National Cancer Institute’s
Cancer and Genetics Research Laboratory in Gaithersburg, MD. The lab is a
high-throughput, germline genomics facility that utilizes many next-generation,
whole-genome assay technologies to support a diverse portfolio of cancer
research programs. CGR is both a data generation and bioinformatics analysis
resource. The StorHouse project goals are to alleviate existing storage
constraints, reduce backup cycles on the laboratory’s primary storage, and provide
a highly stable, scalable, and more cost-efficient long-term storage
strategy for less active but still critical genotyping and sequencing data.

StorHouse will manage a new tier 2 storage layer for the ever-growing volume of
less frequently accessed genomic data – a category of information too expensive
to keep on tier 1 storage but of critical importance to retain in a
cost-effective, managed environment for timely access, research, and analysis.
The StorHouse solution will leverage the benefits of using tape in an active
archive environment and reduce the amount of genomics data currently stored on
costly tier 1 media.

"The system combines storage
management, backup, and archive on a single unified platform while providing
enterprise data assurance and access at the lowest cost per terabyte of
storage,
" said Gary Szukalski, president, FileTek.
