Alaska Nonprofit Organization Cook Inlet Tribal Council Chooses Zetta.net

Providing cloud backup and DR for 2.5TB in NetApp filers

Zetta.net (Zetta, Inc.) announced that the
tribal nonprofit organization Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) is using Zetta
DataProtect for NetApp to provide cloud backup and DR for critical data housed
in its NetApp Filers.

CITC selected Zetta.net’s 3-in-1 backup, DR and archiving solution to avoid the
costly investment of an additional NetApp Filer, third party software, and WAN
traffic accelerator – saving $75,000 as a result.

With a largely Windows-based environment that uses VMware for its 50 VM
infrastructure and NetApp, Inc.‘s storage, CITC had increasing concerns about the
possible damage a natural disaster might present. A recent storm that caused a
three-day power outage in the area was a serious reminder that its valuable
data may be at risk.

With more than 2.5TB of data growing at about 10GB a month, CITC wanted to
add an offsite, cloud-based backup solution that would give them the ability to
quickly and easily recover data without high cost or complexity. The
organization also wanted to avoid having to purchase a second NetApp filer to
achieve its data protection goals.

A number of possible options could have solved the company’s challenges. But
CITC lacked the budget for a second NetApp Filer system, and the company
preferred not to be overly tied into any specific hardware vendor. Provisioning
a second NetApp Filer-including the data center hosting costs, third party
software, and a WAN traffic accelerator to minimize network bandwidth
charges-would have involved a significant investment.

After evaluating alternatives, CITC discovered Zetta.net. The Zetta.net
DataProtect for NetApp solution offers a 3-in-1 data protection solution for
backup, DR, and archiving-and it supports NetApp without the addition of costly
additional hardware.

The solution is HIPAA compliant, allowing CITC to meet regulatory requirements as a nonprofit funded by the US government.
Using DataProtect, CITC has been able to eliminate cumbersome tape
backup
processes while gaining peace of mind that its data is secure in the
event of snowstorms, which occur frequently in the area.

"Zetta.net DataProtect for NetApp
gave us enterprise offsite backup and DR,
" said Jerry Kung IT
director, Cook Inlet Tribal Council. "Since
the solution doesn’t require additional hardware, we were able to deploy it
within hours. It also allowed us to avoid purchasing another NetApp filer, SnapVault
software, and provisioning another data center just for offsite backup-saving
us many thousands of dollars.
