Euroson America Selling Software To Determine Amount of Inactive Data

File System Analyzer from PoINT Software & Systems

Euroson America, Inc., the North American distribution partner for PoINT Software & Systems GmbH announces the availability of the PoINT File System Analyzer, a software tool to allow storage administrators to determine the amount of inactive data in a their primary storage systems.

Typically as files grow older, the frequency of access decreases to a level which is almost negligible. This results in a situation where expensive primary storage is not used efficiently because system capacity is overloaded with inactive files. This has additional negative impact on the backup and retrieval process.

File System Analyzer includes a user interface to provide an easy to use tool which allows to measure this level of inefficiency by analyzing an existing file system based upon file attributes like last access time or last modification time and providing real numbers.

Upon specification of the file system to be analyzed the tool starts scanning. After scanning the program provides the user with a tool for dynamic analysis of the amount of data which is not accessed by clients and applications. Using these scan results the parameters "Age of active data less then …" can be dynamically modified to see how the relation between active and inactive data changes, without the need for additional file system scans.

The program provides the results in a graphical view presenting the amount of inactive data in relation to active data. The tool presents the results of an analysis in five different views.

Primary storage systems have high acquisition and maintenance costs. For keeping costs down and avoiding storage capacity extensions only active data should be stored there.

"In reality the situation is often totally different," explains Kevin Byrne, president, Euroson America. "Typically up to 80% of the data in primary storage is inactive."

The File System Analyzer is provided free of charge to prospective customers who are in an enterprise environment and is intended to illustrate the potential savings from adopting a tiered storage and archiving solution such as PoINT Storage Manager Software.
