Smart Modular Technologies Adding e.MMC Product Family

SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. announced an expansion of its flash based storage solution offerings with its eMMC product family.

Available in both industrial-temp (-40°C to +85°C) and extended-temp (-25°C to +85°C) versions, this new product family is comprised of two different BGA (ball-grid array) configurations. Customers can choose between a 100-ball, 1.0mm pitch package measuring 14mm x 18mm, or a 169-ball, 0.5mm pitch package measuring 12mm x 16mm. Both configurations are available in 8GB to 64GB densities.

Compliant to the JEDEC eMMC standard v4.5/4.51, eMMC products are manufactured in ISO-9001, ISO-14001 and TS-16949 certified facilities to the requirements and certifications as mandated by automotive and industrial OEM’s; such as AEC-Q100 compliance. SMART also adheres to PPAP BOM control and documentation requirements.

NAND Flash memory has become the storage technology of choice for automotive and industrial embedded applications. System designers seeking to incorporate NAND Flash in their products are challenged by the implementation of complex ECCs and data management algorithms necessary to utilize NAND flash memory natively. SMART Modular eMMC products offer a cost-effective NAND flash storage solution that simplifies system design by making the complexity of the underlying NAND Flash technology invisible to the host system. This enables easier design-in, reduced time-to-market, and simpler migration as NAND Flash technology scales.

System designs can benefit from additional features available in SMART’s eMMC products such as: large boot partition size, configurable user area to pseudo-SLC mode, power loss protection and device health status reporting.

SMART Modular eMMC products are available for sampling, with volume production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2014.

The company showcased its eMMC products at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, CA.
