Storage Strategies NOW (SSG-NOW), a storage analysis and research organization, released the findings of a new report and survey on solid state drives and flash memory technology.
Titled Enterprise Use Cases for Solid State Storage, the report defines solid state and flash memory technologies, outlines the growth in SSD/flash implementations and details how small and enterprise-size businesses are adopting and deploying SSDs/flash memory for server and desktop virtualization, OLTP, analytics and primary tier 0 storage.
The report also includes partial results of an IT professionals SSD/flash survey, co-sponsored by SSG-NOW and ITIC (Information Technology Intelligence Consulting), which presents information on the status of the SSD/flash market.
Key findings of the report and survey:
- 32% of the respondents surveyed have definitive plans to deploy SSDs;
- 43% of those polled are spending from $101,000 to up to $500,000 annually on storage resources
- Server virtualization has been highlighted as the primary use for SSDs/flash;
- 31% of the respondents indicated that they will use SSDs/flash to bolster performance for OLTP.
"The IT Professionals SSD/Flash Adoption Survey sheds new light on how organizations will deploy these new technologies," says Deni Connor, principal analyst, SSG-NOW. "Among the findings from over 400 respondents are that 37% will deploy SSDs/flash in existing storage arrays."
The report outlines technology solutions from more than 48 hardware and software vendors. It also includes detailed product validation and pricing information and real-world use case scenarios, as well as best practices for selecting, deploying and managing SSD/flash cloud storage solutions.
Methodology
Information for this report was obtained through a number of sources including vendor questionnaires and interviews, end-user and MSP interactions, available market data and a survey of IT professionals, conducted in the first quarter of 2011.
Pricing and Availability
Enterprise Use Cases for Solid State Storage costs $5,000. The ITIC/SSG-NOW 2013-2014 SSD/Flash Deployment and Storage Trends Survey can be purchased separately.
