IBM 1.6TB SAS 2.5-Inch MLC SSDs For System x or BladeCenter

From Smart Storage Systems

The IBM 1.6 TB SSD employs MLC NAND technology to bring an affordable solution with read and write performance for applications requiring enterprise workloads with a R/W mix.

The new SSDs will be available as 2.5-inch options.

These SSDs use a single-chip controller with a SAS interface on the system side and NAND flash internally. Packaged in an HDD replacement enclosure, these SSDs integrate in existing storage infrastructures. They are targeted at databases that require high I/O performance in random read and random write operations including applications such as caching and tiering.

They are covered under IBM warranty. These drives carry a one-year limited warranty, or when installed in a System x server, these drives assume the system’s base warranty. Solid-state devices do have finite write or P/E cycles, which are listed as Total Bytes Written (TBW).

Features and functions of 1.6 TB 2.5-inch MLC SAS SSDs
for IBM System x:

  • Capacity in a 2.5-inch industry-standard form factor
  • Utilization of 24nm cost-effective MLC NAND technology
  • Random read and write performance to fulfill client needs in the enterprise space
  • Endurance to withstand applications with moderate R/W workloads
  • Power backup circuitry designed to ensure that user data in transit is committed to flash memory in the event of a power failure
  • Temperature management to help prevent the drive from overheating and operating outside of its specified limitations
  • Absence of moving parts, which reduces potential failure points in the server

Warranty
1.6 TB SAS 2.5-inch MLC Enterprise SSDs offer a 1-year limited warranty.

Solid-state memory cells have an intrinsic, finite number of program/erase cycles that each cell can incur. As a result, solid-state storage has a maximum amount of program/erase cycles to which it can be subjected. IBM’s warranty for the solid-state storage is limited to devices that have not reached the maximum guaranteed number of program/erase cycles, as documented in the Official Published Specifications for the product. A drive that reaches this limit may fail to operate according to its Specifications

Key prerequisites
