Buffalo
Technology and PacketVideo
Corporation teamed up to develop a NAS solution that
delivers DLNA-compatible DSD audio files.
Buffalo demonstrated the DSD over
DLNA-enabled NAS system on May 9th at the 2013 HIGH END exhibition in
Munich.
DLNA is an association of consumer
electronics manufacturers and mobile communication companies, which
promotes interoperability standards for connected digital homes. DSD
is the last high-resolution digital audio format, a single-bit
process with a scan rate of 2.8224 MHz.
It uses noise-shaping
quantisation to push system-related conversion noise into inaudible
ultrasound frequencies. The result is a wide dynamic range and rich
frequency response than any CD or DVD. High-res DSD files featuring
audio quality have become available for download online.
The recorded audio file is stored as a
DSD file on a disk drive or USB flash drive, and can be played as
normal on a computer or audio player. However, DLNA-playback via
networked audio environments was previously not an option due to the
lack of DSD capable NAS. The partnership between the two firms aims
to enable DSD files playback via DLNA devices. A Buffalo NAS supports
the playback of 2.8-MHz/5.6-MHz DSF/DFF (DSDIFF) files, known as DSD
files.
"This technology has brought
the high-end audio sector to the brink of a quantum leap. DSD over
DLNA promises consumers the ultimate listening pleasure together with
the smart comfort of a network audio solution," said
Masakazu Araki, global product marketing department at Buffalo.
With this project, Buffalo is providing
this NAS and interoperability support for all major audio
manufacturers in developing DSD-enabled AV receiver systems and
network audio players with DLNA.
