Cloud49
the cloud service provider has teamed up with CTERA
Networks Ltd. to provide the first hybrid storage solution that is
built to meet US Federal certification requirements.
This service, named Cloud49 Backup AS
(Advanced Security) features CTERA’s cloud storage gateways at the
customers’ premises, with replication to Amazon
GovCloud.
The company employs CTERA’s cloud
storage service delivery platform to manage the service, using a mix
of customer-premises cloud storage gateway appliances and end-point
software agents. This hybrid architecture allows customers to benefit
from local network performance for local storage, backup and
recovery, while the cloud provides access to files from anywhere,
including mobile devices, and off-site recovery from local disasters.
Cloud49 has been using AWS as its cloud
infrastructure, providing it flexibility and scalability with no
investment in infrastructure. With security and compliance being of
importance for Backup AS, Cloud49 turned to Amazon GovCloud, allowing
it to be compliant with a variety of requirements and certifications,
including FISMA Moderate, ITAR, SSAE 16 (formerly SAS70 Type II),
FIPS 140-2, PCI DSS Level 1, ISO 27001 and HIPAA.
Using CTERA’s data security features
allows the company to maintain compliance not just in the cloud,
additionally securing data across the board from the customer
premises, in transit and as it is stored in the cloud:
- AES-256 encryption for data
at-rest and in-transit, covering both locally- and cloud-stored data;
- Active Directory and LDAP
integration for user authentication and single-sign on;
- Private encryption key management,
allowing customers to have exclusive access to their data;
- SHA-1 fingerprinting to ensure
data integrity;
- X.509 certificates preventing
man-in-the-middle attacks.
"CTERA makes it easy for us to
provide a robust backup solution to federal agencies and contractors
on Amazon GovCloud," said Nathaniel Gates, president of Cloud49. "In the security- and compliance-bound federal
sector, we are required to offer an airtight solution that adheres to
the most stringent regulations. By combining the end-to-end security
provided by CTERA’s technology, Amazon’s industry-leading datacenter
certifications, and our own best practices, we are able to offer the
first hybrid data protection solution that meets US Federal
certification requirements."
"Cloud storage is not a ‘one
size fits all’ solution," said Paul Stich , EVP North
America at CTERA. "We architected our solution to support
multiple use-cases, with no compromise on security. We’re glad to see Cloud49 taking advantage of these capabilities with this specialized
offering."
Cloud49 runs its service on SAS 70
Level II certified public cloud infrastructure, avoiding the need for
investment in infrastructure and aligning its operating expenses with
customer revenue. CTERA’s management platform, CTERA Portal, with its
multi-tier, multi-tenant architecture, gives Cloud49 the ability to
serve customers but also provide ‘wholesale’ cloud storage services
to resellers and MSPs, empowering them to deliver their own branded
service. With CTERA Portal’s compatibility with a variety of cloud
services and platforms, Cloud49 avoids being locked into a specific
public cloud service.
