Sony Optiarc to Close Doors

On the first page of the Web site of Sony Optiarc, you can read:
Sony Optiarc Inc. will stop its business by end of March 2013. We truly thank you for your patronage with our products. This web site will be closed by March 31, 2013.”

It’s not surprising. The market of optical discs and drives is slowly dying. Even some PC manufacturers do not integrate anymore an optical drive in their configurations. Sony has decided to throw the towel, closing its wholly-owned subsidiary.

More precisely Sony NEC Optiarc Inc. was established on April 3, 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC separating their optical disc drive businesses and combining them in a new company headquartered in Kanagawa, Japan, with subsidiaries in Ismaning, Germany, San Jose, CA and Hong Kong.

With a capital of 1,490 million yen, it was mainly, designing, manufacturing and selling DVD±R and Blu-ray writers for OEMs.

On September 2008, Sony and NEC signed an agreement to transfer NEC’s 45% stock in Sony NEC Optiarc becoming totally owned by Sony.

As of July, 2012, the subsidiary had 81 employees
