Nexenta Certifies Smart Storage Systems Optimus SAS SSDs

For ZFS appliances

SMART
Storage Systems, Inc.
announced
that Nexenta Systems, Inc. has certified the company’s Optimus SSD.

An enterprise SSD utilizing the SAS 6Gb/s interface, the Optimus improves performance
of NexentaStor-enabled storage appliances while lowering the total cost per terabyte written (TBW) for enterprise applications through enhanced endurance.

"SSDs
play a very critical role in most of Nexenta’s deployments, therefore we
continue to research, test and certify upcoming SSDs,
" said Jim
Fitzgerald, VP of business development at Nexenta. "We are proud to partner with SMART Storage Systems because it gives our
customers an additional choice when selecting enterprise class SSDs for their
Nexenta configurations.
"

A NAS/SAN software platform,
NexentaStor is designed to make data storage more cost-effective by enabling
organizations to leverage industry standard hardware rather than proprietary
systems. The software platform improves storage performance by offering
a lineup of software features including inline deduplication,
unlimited snapshots and cloning, unlimited file size and high-availability
support. When paired with Optimus SAS SSD, storage
systems can achieve consistent performance when compared to legacy
storage systems. In addition, the Optimus decreases the cost of
storage by enhancing the endurance of MLC flash,
allowing for the lowest cost per TBW for mixed workload and write intensive
enterprise applications.

The combination of the Optimus SAS SSD and
NexentaStor software platform will be on display as part of the Boston Igloo NX
Series Solid State Appliance (SSA) in the SMART Storage Systems booth during
the upcoming CeBIT 2013 conference. The Boston Igloo NX Series SSA leverages
the ZFS file system to deliver previously proprietary storage
features at no extra cost, while supporting capacities up to 1.6TB per SSD
slot, allowing it to achieve up to 38.4TB of raw SSD storage in a 2U unit. Utilizing Optimus SAS SSDs
for mass storage, the Boston Igloo NX Series SSA leverages high-speed caching
and auto tiering features to increase SAN performance.

"Our
customers require high-throughput, high-capacity storage solutions to support
the datasets bogging down their data centers,
" said Manoj Nayee, MD at
Boston Ltd. "The Optimus SSD with
NexentaStor software allow our Igloo NX Series to take performance to a whole other
level without requiring the use of higher-cost components and hardware. This
enables us to not only meet the performance-related requirements of our
customers, but their budget restrictions as well.
"

The Optimus SAS SSD is designed to meet the
demands of enterprise and other HPC environments,
delivering random read/write performance up to 100K/50K IOPS and sustained
transfer rates in excess of 500MB/s. Leveraging SMART Storage Systems’ Guardian
Technology Platform, a proprietary suite of enterprise features and endurance
enhancement technologies which enable the Optimus SAS SSD to achieve 10 full
random drive writes per day for a period of five years with consumer-grade MLC
flash, resulting in a lower cost per TBW. The Optimus SAS SSD comes equipped
with SMART Storage Systems’ third generation backup power circuit technology,
full data path protection, data fail recovery, thermal monitoring and AES
256-bit encryption. The Optimus SAS SSD is available in capacities ranging from
200GB to 1.6TB.

"Storage architects are redesigning the data
center to take advantage of flash-based storage,
" said John
Scaramuzzo, president of SMART Storage Systems. "Our Optimus SSD was designed to provide industry-leading performance
and endurance from the lowest-cost MLC flash. When combined with the
NexentaStor software platform, data center managers can raise the bar on
performance, while lowering the bar on cost, resulting in the best value
proposition for any enterprise application.
