Cleversafe Stores 70PB in 2012

Another 100PB expected in 2013

Cleversafe Inc. has had another record year of growth in dispersed object-storage implementations with more than 70PB of stored data.

Customers that have experienced first hand the ease of implementing an object-storage strategy to accommodate massive data growth have already placed orders to expand capacity, which will bring the number of PB stored using Cleversafe’s Object-based Dispersed Storage solution to nearly 170PB across customers in media and communications, healthcare, geospatial and federal government verticals.

Founded in 2004, Cleversafe has made strides in technology innovation year over year to deliver on the capabilities of dispersed object-storage technology. This past year it continued to exemplify ingenuity and drive to achieve limitless scale storage by removing limitations on the movement, management and storage of data in order to capitalize on the intelligence gained through big data analytics.

In January, the company announced its ability to store data at Exabyte scale in order to keep pace with the growth of data sets, which are increasing at a rate of 60% or more each year. It took the data management limitations of Hadoop MapReduce head on and combined compute capabilities with dispersed storage to deliver higher reliability and efficiency to users of Hadoop. And most recently, the company announced a new series of storage appliances, based on Intel Xeon processors, to achieve performance level throughput of 1TB/s for ingesting and storing data at exabyte scale.

"When you consider just how valuable a company’s data is, moving to an entirely new storage strategy isn’t something a CIO considers doing overnight. It’s more of a ‘crawl, walk and then run’ approach," said Chris Gladwin, founder and CEO of Cleversafe. "Generational shifts in technology happen over time. Cleversafe has been preparing for the tidal wave of big data since 2004 and we’ve successfully designed object-storage to be an executable reality. Its time has arrived and it’s evident by the growth we’re seeing in our customer base today."

Shutterfly, Inc. which has an active archive of fifteen billion images and nearly 50PB of data being stored on Cleversafe’s dispersed object-based storage solution, has increased its storage capacity this year to continue to offer customer service and offer deeper, more meaningful engagement as its business evolves. As more mobile devices, new social channels and more mediums, such as video are being used by customers, being able to scale ensures that the quality and ease of accessibility to all content remains a seamless experience.

Lockheed Martin Corp. has extended its technology alliance with Cleversafe this year to offer the company’s dispersed compute capabilities directly to government entities in a Mission On Demand Storage Cloud. Effectively eliminating the need to purchase separate infrastructure to gain critical intelligence and keep pace with massive growth in data volumes.

GeoEye, Inc. also turned to Cleversafe this year in order to ensure that its massive active archive of satellite imagery is always available to experts on the ground who need access to vital information in order to protect lives, manage risk, and optimize resources. Cleversafe’s Dispersed Storage Network (dsNet) solution provides GeoEye with over 99.9999999999999% (15 nines) of data reliability and system uptime – as it needs to scale to petabyte levels and beyond.

Integrated Data Storage, LLC (IDS), a channel partner, acquired Cleversafe’s Dispersed-Object Storage solution to bolster its public cloud and offer customers a more comprehensive cloud strategy at a more cost effective price point. Many rapidly growing enterprises want to grow their storage consumption as their data grows and IDS provides a secure, reliable and cost effective entry-level environment across multiple data centers in the US to manage the challenge.

"Cleversafe continues to demonstrate a leadership position in the storage industry," said Simon Robinson, Research VP, The 451 Group. "It’s evident from the company’s customer momentum this year that object-storage is becoming a strong foundational component to many enterprises’ storage strategies. As companies look to more effectively manage massive increases in stored data while looking for suitable levels of security, availability and performance Cleversafe’s dispersed object-storage presents a solid, limitless option."

Cleversafe’s dsNet system protects both data and metadata equally and is more reliable than traditional storage systems. By applying the company’s Information Dispersal technology to slice and disperse data, single points of failure and centralized synchronization points are eliminated. As data is distributed evenly across all Slicestor nodes metadata can scale linearly and infinitely as new nodes are added, thus reducing any scalability bottlenecks and increasing performance and reliability. Cleversafe’s approach delivers the combination of analytics and storage in a geographically distributed single system allowing organizations to scale their big data environments to hundreds of PBs and even EBs today.

The company increased its IP portfolio in support of Dispersed Storage technology and presently holds 30 granted and issued patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
