Panzura Supporting Amazon Glacier
In its cloud storage system
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on December 4, 2012 at 2:57 pmFrom the Amazon re:Invent show in Las Vegas, NV, Panzura, Inc., is adding support for the Amazon Glacier storage API.
Amazon Glacier is a secure and reliable cloud storage solution priced as low as $0.01/GB and designed for data archiving and backup use cases.
In addition, Panzura also announced it will offer an in-cloud VM as an AMI of its Quicksilver Cloud Storage Controller that runs in Amazon EC2.
Combined with existing support for Amazon S3, the addition of Glacier and Amazon EC2 AMI solutions builds on the tight interaction between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Panzura’s Global Cloud Storage System. Glacier support provides access by Panzura customers to an low-cost storage option, allowing them to tier storage according to needs between S3 and Glacier and to optimize for cost/performance. Customers can leverage S3 for data requiring rapid access and Glacier for data that can tolerate slower retrieval times.
The in-cloud AMI version of Panzura’s Quicksilver Cloud Storage Controller for EC2, one of the first from a cloud storage appliance provider, allows Amazon customers to leverage Panzura technology across AWS platforms. This Quicksilver AMI can be used to restore data from S3 or Glacier either to users at a customer site or to applications running in EC2, where AWS would serve as an in-cloud DR site.
This added capability provides more flexibility to Panzura customers in optimizing their global storage infrastructure, including:
- A standard CIFS/NFS interface for applications running in EC2 connecting to Amazon S3 or Glacier storage
- Integration with a global file system connecting virtual and physical Quicksilver controllers worldwide
- Enable global access to data even when that data is restricted to storage in a specific cloud region
The Panzura/Amazon joint platforms provide a cloud tier for computing, tier 2 storage, and archive/backup. This cloud combination gives a breadth of functionality that covers performance, cost and security. Customers such as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, announced in a companion release, can tap into unprecedented levels of flexibility and scalability, while still ensuring that their data is protected.
"In the wake of disasters like Superstorm Sandy where valuable data can be compromised, DR has gained greater priority while minimizing storage costs continue to drive IT strategy discussions," said Randy Chou, CEO of Panzura. "We’re excited to offer support for both Amazon Glacier and Amazon EC2 to help companies and organizations safeguard and control data at any location, at all times, no matter the circumstance."
The solution will be available in limited release in early 2013.
