Silver Peak Velocity Software on Dell Compellent

Silver Peak Systems, Inc., in accelerating data over distance, announced that its Velocity solution for replication acceleration has been expanded to include Dell Compellent Remote Instant Replay technology.

Velocity allows storage administrators to accelerate their offsite replication workloads quickly and easily.

Starting at $15,995, Velocity software makes replication acceleration affordable for Compellent environments.

When the Velocity solution is combined with Compellent Remote Instant Replay technology for replication, companies can protect up to 30x more data over existing networks, reducing replication times from hours to minutes without having to invest in expensive infrastructure upgrades. This minimizes bandwidth expenditures and helps storage administrators meet their stringent RPO.

Velocity leverages Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) to overcome common network challenges that hamper offsite replication, including limited WAN bandwidth, distance and network quality. With unique storage forwarding method of deployment, the solution makes replication acceleration easy for a storage administrator. Deployment takes less than 20 minutes and can be done completely from the storage administrator’s domain-no network configuration changes are required. Administrators download and install Silver Peak software in the data center and DR sites, point the Compellent arrays to Silver Peak, and in minutes start accelerating replication traffic.

Proven Technology
In lab testing, the combined solution delivers 6x to 30x better replication performance on average over un-optimized replication environments. For example, on a 155Mbps shared network between Atlanta, Georgia and Dallas, Texas (40 milliseconds of latency), the time required to replicate a 20GB dataset was reduced from 1.3 hours to 3 minutes.

Benefits
A US-based engineering consulting company is using Compellent Remote Instant Replay and Silver Peak to replicate 200GB of data between Texas and Maryland. Originally, the company was only getting 1.1GB/hr of replication throughput due to the long distance and low-quality WAN connection. With the combined Silver Peak and Compellent solution, it is realizing a 25x performance improvement, having reduced replication times from 180 hours to less than seven hours-well within the company’s 12-hour RPO.

Similarly, Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union (Denali) improved replication performance by over 66% with Silver Peak and Compellent Remote Instant Replay. Prior to deploying the joint solution, replication of a 50GB dataset between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska was taking 11 hours. After deploying Silver Peak, replication times were reduced to less than five hours.

Availability and Pricing
Silver Peak Velocity for Dell Compellent is available. Pricing for the Velocity solution is $15,995 for a one-year subscription, which includes licenses for two Silver Peak Velocity VMs and support. Perpetual pricing options are also available. Each Silver Peak Velocity appliance supports up to 300GB/hr of replication throughput, making it for most Compellent replication environments.

Specially-priced bundles for EqualLogic replication acceleration are also available through Dell and its authorized resellers.
