PBT, which offers a nationwide freight service, is the
first company in Australasia to adopt IBM PureSystems.

PBT provides logistics, transport, courier, and bulk freight movement services
as well as storage and distribution solutions across New Zealand. To address
the growing business needs, PBT needed to enhance their IT infrastructure
through efficient server consolidation and storage enhancement. They also
wanted to strengthen their DR system for better risk management.

Working with local business partner Westcon Group, Inc., IBM delivered a PureSystems
solution that will help PBT become more agile and deliver higher quality IT
faster. It will support the company’s core applications and enhance
customer service in the hyper-competitive national freight and distribution
industry. The PureSystems solution, selected after a competitive bid against
HP, EMC, and Dell
, comprises a customized PureFlex server and management
module, Storwize V7000 storage and ProtecTier DR.

"We initially set out to rectify capacity
issues on our aging SAN and expected to see some incremental benefits in terms
of performance, in practice we achieved both and in fact realized a significant
step change in performance. The SAN and server market is very competitive,
however the two key differentiators for us in selecting IBM PureFlex systems
were the integrated management of server and storage, and that it is at the
beginning of the technology lifecycle,
" said Chris Poulter, CIO, Peter
Baker Transport.

"Couple this with IBM’s extensive
training options and doing the implementation ourselves, we know we now have an
easily managed solution that precisely meets our long term needs. We can plan
our infrastructure architecture roadmap knowing that we are in control and have
a solid foundation for future growth,
" said Poulter.

IBM has integrated all of the technology components –
compute, virtualized servers, storage, networking, and cloud management
software – in its PureSystems family. With the adoption of IBM’s smarter
computing approach, PBT will be able to optimize their IT resource utilization,
reduce complexity, and support organizational growth.

"The prime challenge facing
companies of all sizes is the need to spend much of their IT budgets on simple
operations and maintenance of disparate systems and suppliers, leaving little
to invest in innovation,
" says Prasanna Gulasekharam, New Zealand manager,
IBM Systems & Technology Group. "With
our new expert integrated systems family, New Zealand customers can now benefit
from IBM’s US $2 billion R&D investment in PureSystems, designed to
integrate all IT elements, both physical and virtual, and combine them with
packaged technology expertise.
