10TB HDDs Possible With Record 1.5bit/Inch² Areal Density
Based on TDK heads and Showa platters
By Jean Jacques Maleval | October 8, 2012 at 3:15 pmTDK Corp. hits a density record of 1.5Tb per square inch, allowing a 3.5-inch HDD to have a capacity of 2TB per platter or up to 10TB on device with five disks. It also means 1TB per 2.5-inch disk.
This record was achieved with the help of Showa Denko K.K, together improving the magnetic head and hard disk platter. TDK designed Tunneling Magneto-Resistance (TMR) head, which uses thermal assist recording and a near-light field.
TDK showcased the technology at CEATEC Japan 2012.
But volume production are not expected before 2013 or 2014.
