Kroll Ontrack Tape Services to Restore Tivoli Storage Manager Data

Regardless of TSM version

Kroll Ontrack Inc. announced IT administrators will now be able to leverage Kroll Ontrack tape services to restore IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) data, regardless of the TSM version used at the time of backup and independent of their current storage environment.

Eliminating the requirement of a TSM environment for tape file recovery, restoration and migration enables administrators to granularly restore files within tapes, producing time and cost savings, especially for organizations bound by a data production deadline, such as litigation.

Traditionally, recovery, restoration and migration of TSM data required IT administrators to build and replicate the identical TSM server environment or revert the tape server environment back to the settings in which the tapes were created. Doing so not only presents logistical challenges, but inhibits the ability to conduct an expedited data restoration.

"To date, there simply has not been an easy and cost-effective way to restore data contained on Tivoli Storage manager," said Jeff Pederson, manager of data recovery operations, Kroll Ontrack. "This becomes a significant issue when corporations are attempting to manage this process while balancing the budget, resources and time constraints of a project. Similar to our Ontrack PowerControls technology, Kroll Ontrack can now eliminate this headache by granularly restoring only the files needed on each tape. Further, Kroll Ontrack has multiple tape drives, affording the ability to restore multiple tapes and specific files simultaneously, which further expedites the tape restoration job."

Benefits of this new tape services capability
include the ability to:

  • Restore old, deleted or expired files from tape backups even if they’re not in TSM’s database anymore.
  • Restore millions of files without memory limitations.
  • Conduct tape restorations in parallel and in any order, improving the speed of the job.
