StorSimple Cloud-Integrated Storage Achieves Up to 5x De-Dupe
Reducing costs "by 60%"
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on September 13, 2012 at 2:30 pmStorSimple, Inc. released results of data collected from production installations showing that a cloud-integrated storage approach to enterprise storage offers data de-dupe ratios that average 3x to 5x for on-premise data and data in the cloud.
The analysis of the data concluded that enterprises can reduce the total cost of storage by up to 60% by adopting cloud-integrated SANs compared to traditional premise-only SAN storage.
"The field data indicates that StorSimple cloud-integrated storage can achieve data de-dupe ratios on primary storage that reduce capacity requirements to less than one third of traditional SAN storage. What’s even more unique is that our de-dupe also extends automatically to snapshots, backups and tiered data stored in the cloud," said Marc Farley, senior director of customer and community programs at StorSimple. "These results confirm that the dramatic cost savings afforded by StorSimple systems begin with de-duplicating primary data running in flash memory, and extend all the way through the cloud."
Dedicated de-dupe systems work only on backup data and require separate backup software, tape equipment and DR facilities. With StorSimple cloud-integrated storage appliances, de-dupe works on primary as well as backup data and automatically tiers de-duped data to the cloud where it can be accessed immediately, if needed.
Cloud-integrated storage eliminates the need for SAN capacity upgrades for storing inactive data, backup software licensing, backup de-dupe and tape systems, offsite tape storage and remote replication sites – and as a result, reduces the cost of storage and data management. Specifically, the capacity savings from de-dupe contribute 10% of the total TCO savings.
The field study is based on information gathered from the call-home functionality in StorSimple cloud-integrated storage appliances.
