CRU–DataPort
LLC.
announced the WiebeTech
Forensic
ComboDock
v5, a forensic device that enables write-blocking to be safely
turned on and off.
The forensic device gives
customers a secure option that provides write-blocking and read/write
capabilities while preventing corruption of the data and HDD.
The ComboDock is compatible with
all forensic acquisition and analysis software and has all the
features of the Forensic UltraDock and the UltraDock v5, with host
connections, an LCD screen and a menu to view drive
information and error/warning messages, five ports on the host side,
and other features that make UltraDock the leading forensic
field imager. Both versions have a rugged aluminum
enclosure, with Forensic ComboDock a bright yellow to identify it as
CRU-DataPort’s only device that allows write-blocking to be turned
off in a secure way.
This device makes it impossible to
unintentionally turn off write-blocking. Every time it is turned on,
it asks the user to choose write-blocking or read/write mode,
avoiding problems that can occur when the user forgets to change the
mode to write-blocking. This is a simple and secure way to turn off
write-blocking. Other devices in the market require the user
to permanently break off a piece of the case to turn off
write-blocking with tiny switches, often leading to confusion about
what mode the device is in. The LED indicator light and the
screen menu clearly identify the work mode.
"We know, as many of our
customers do, that data gathered using non write-blocked methods is
often not allowed in the court room," says Randal Barber,
president and CEO, CRU-DataPort. "However, it is important to
provide a choice when investigators or others require a multipurpose
product."
For law enforcement, the military
and those who may have limited space for what devices they can carry, the ability to turn-off write-blocking allows the device to fill
multiple needs. Large corporate IT companies who have their own
forensic departments may need equipment that will serve as an
investigative tools and general purpose IT tools.
James Wiebe, Forensic Business
Development for CRU-DataPort, says: "Forensic investigators
and the legal community know they can defend and win cases with
CRU-DataPort’s forensic devices, because they are tamper-proof for
write-blocking. However, some customers do have a legitimate need to
be able to turn off write-blocking. It’s critical that when
write-blocking is turned off, that the user is aware of what mode
they are working in to avoid accidental data corruption."
