AgigA Tech: Third-Gen DDR3 AGIGARAM Non-Volatile DIMMs

Supporting up to 1600MT/s, 1GB to 4GB

AgigA Tech Inc., subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. and provider of high-speed, high-density, battery-free non-volatile memory solutions, introduced its third-generation DDR3 AGIGARAM Non-Volatile DIMM solution supporting up to 1600 MT/s performance.

In addition, AgigA Tech announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has recently issued U.S. Patent Nos. 8,200,885 and 8,200,929 pertaining to Hybrid Non-Volatile RAM technology, adding to the company’s rapidly growing patent portfolio.

Performance and Persistence AgigA Tech’s third-generation DDR3 NVDIMM
products have been designed to integrate into the DIMM slots of
industry-standard server and storage platforms. During normal operation,
the NVDIMM appears as a standard registered DDR3 DIMM to the host
system, providing the benefits and speed of high-speed, high-density
DRAM.

In the event of an unexpected power loss, critical data in DRAM moves
to onboard flash memory using a battery-free power source based on
ultracapacitors
. The transfer preserves the data, which can be safely restored when power is returned.

Supporting up to DDR3-1600 speeds, the NVDIMM allows for fast,
persistent memory on the main memory bus that can be used as a
non-volatile write cache or metadata storage, among many applications.
Offered in a JEDEC-standard 240-pin DIMM form factor, 22mm high, the low
profile NVDIMMs can target a range of platforms.

Availability The AGIGA8601 family of products are offered in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB densities, and are available for customer evaluation. AgigA Tech also offers several standard and custom form factors for the companion PowerGEM ultracapacitor module.

AGIGARAM is a new class of non-volatile memory developed to meet the
need for higher-density, higher-performance memory for enterprise
storage and server applications. By combining DRAM, flash, an
intelligent system controller and an ultracapacitor power source,
AGIGARAM provides a reliable memory subsystem that runs with the latency
and endurance of the fastest DRAM, and with the persistence of flash.
Until recently, designers have used batteries to maintain their data
during power outages.

Others have moved toward new flash-based technologies for memory
persistence, but this option falls short of DRAM in terms of latency,
speed, endurance and reliability. AGIGARAM enables fast possible system
performance while also eliminating the headaches associated with
batteries, such as hazardous material disposal, short operating life and
extensive maintenance.

AgigA Tech has pioneered the use of a battery-free power source based on ultracapacitor
technology for this application. All products utilize ultracapacitors
that have gone through reliability and accelerated life testing at
reliability test lab, which has been operational for over 4 years.
