WORM Technology for Infortrend EonNAS

Becoming compliance archive solution

Infortrend Corporation announced a firmware embedded with WORM technology for its EonNAS storage solutions.

With the growing importance of regulatory compliance in IT environments, it can play an important role by allowing the preservation of data in a non-rewriteable, non-erasable and unalterable compliance-ready format that ensures archive integrity.

Some countries have defined strict archive guidelines and implementation is mandatory for organisations in the government, medical and financial sectors. Hefty penalties can ensue for organisations deviating from the guidelines. This is where WORM technology comes in. This technology can serve as a "corporate memory", containing a variety of data ranging from images, videos, contracts, purchase orders, financial statements, invoices, emails and countless other vital business documents that, once written and stored, can not be modified.

Business in which massive amount of real-time data is constantly being recorded in the field – such as those dealing with meteorology, oceanography and astronomy – can use  WORM technology to protect the recorded data from being over-written, preventing it for future analytical or reference purposes. Additionally, media-intensive industries can archive content without having to worry about the possibility of over-writing previous revisions.

The addition of WORM technology to Infortrend’s EonNAS family marks a milestone for the company and its customers, as these storage systems now offer benefits at both the IT and business levels. While larger enterprises might have a detailed compliance strategy in place, smaller users such as SMBs and SOHOs, tend to rely on less sophisticated approaches. By embedding WORM technology into its storage solutions, the company takes away the concern traditionally associated with the risk of data being modified against legal regulations.

Thomas Kao, Infortrend senior director of Product Planning for Infortrend, noted: "Infortrend is extremely dedicated to the data storage business. Currently, one of the major business challenges we are seeing is fixed-content data retention for legal compliance. We embedded the WORM technology into our EonNAS systems to help businesses better safeguard their vital data and give them enterprise-class storage system functionality. We will continue to research and develop new technologies that can be added to our EonNAS solutions to ensure that our SOHO, SMB and enterprise customers’ vital business data is safeguarded, properly managed and compliance-ready."

The new WORM function embedded firmware is available for EonNAS 1000 and EonNAS Pro Series with additional families being included later in 2012.
