Mid Coast Hospital Using Atlantis ILIO

Coast
Hospital,
Maine’s most modern hospital, deployed Atlantis
ILIO
storage optimization software on the Cisco
Unified
Computing
System
as part of its VMware View deployment to help streamline IT
operations while providing a virtual desktops for physicians, nurses
and staff.

"With virtual desktops, it
is much easier for us to deploy new applications, to make changes on
the fly and get desktops out to our physicians, nurses, and staff
very rapidly," said Michael Poulin, manager of Network
Services at Mid Coast Hospital. "The new system allows us to
manage PCs more efficiently and effectively while reducing overall
operational costs and increasing reliability for providers and
staff."

Mid Coast Hospital selected VMware
View to deliver virtual desktops as a service for a built strategic
urgent care center. The project timeline called for the VDI
infrastructure to be up and running within 90 days. To accelerate the
project, it turned to GreenPages to design and
deliver a virtual desktop infrastructure that could meet deadlines
and lower deployment risks.

"Mid Coast’s IT team
manages a lot of desktops throughout its healthcare system. In
efforts to get the new walk-in facility up and running, they were
looking for ways to increase the number of computer systems while
optimizing storage capacity," said Francis Czekalski, senior
enterprise consultant at GreenPages Technology Solutions. "In
order to get the new facility online in three months we enlisted
Atlantis ILIO in order to avoid complex storage sizing and deliver a
working environment faster. It solved a key challenge with VDI:
storage."

GreenPages designed a virtual
desktop infrastructure using VMware View with ILIO storage
optimization software on Cisco UCS servers using local storage. The
storage optimization provided by Atlantis allows the infrastructure
to handle boot storms, re-compositions, and patching without
impacting the user experience.

"The latest version of
Atlantis ILIO is incredibly fast," continued Poulin. "We
are able to deploy 70 linked clones per server in 12 minutes, and we
can do that on all servers at the same time to scale to an unlimited
number of users with no performance impact."

"The clinical applications
using Atlantis ILIO perform faster in virtual desktops than on a
physical PC," continued Czekalski.

Mid Coast Hospital deployed VMware
View with ILIO on the Cisco UCS C250 servers. The Cisco Extended
Memory Technology (EMT) allowed them to support 192GB of RAM
per server, increasing the number of virtual desktops per server.
With ILIO, Mid Coast runs between 70 and 150 VMware View
linked-clones per server on local disks.

Atlantis ILIO is a VDI storage and
performance optimization software solution that complements VMware
View to optimize storage and boost desktop performance. ILIO changes
the economics and performance characteristics of VDI, reducing the
amount of storage needed and enabling the use of less expensive
storage.
