Atlassian, provider of collaboration software for product teams, announced that Doug Burgum, former chairman of SuccessFactors and former CEO and chairman of Great Plains Software, has joined the company as its chairman of the board.

In addition, Murray Demo, former CFO of Adobe Systems, Dolby Laboratories and LiveOps and Kirk Bowman, venture partner at venture capital firm Accel Partners and former EVP of worldwide sales at both EqualLogic and VMWare, have been elected to the company’s board of directors.

Burgum, Demo and Bowman join Atlassian’s board which includes Richard Wong, general partner at Accel Partners and Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-CEOs and co-founders of Atlassian. Accel Partners invested $60 million in the company’s series A round.

"After a long search looking for just the right people, we’re excited to have three incredible individuals – Doug Burgum, Murray Demo and Kirk Bowman – join our board," said Farquhar. "These individuals have been involved in building extremely successful technology companies over many years across a wide range of markets and business organizations.

"For the chairman role, we were looking for someone who had a magical combination of attributes – the right experience, the right ability to question and push the executive team, and most importantly, the right cultural DNA to be a champion for Atlassian. Doug, a truly unique and amazing human being, surpassed our expectations."

Burgum served on the board of SuccessFactors, a cloud-based human resources management software provider, during the company’s IPO in 2007 before becoming its chairman in 2010 and serving in that role until the company’s acquisition by SAP in December 2011. Before Microsoft, he was CEO and chairman of Great Plains Software, Inc., a publicly traded small and mid-market software company that Microsoft acquired in April 2001. Burgum initially seed-funded Great Plains in 1983 and then grew the company for more than a decade before taking it public in 1997. Burgum started his career as a consultant at McKinsey & company.

Burgum currently serves as a board member and interim CEO of Intelligent InSites, a real-time location systems provider for hospitals and long-term care facilities, and is dedicated to a variety of high impact venture philanthropic projects. Raikes School of Computer Science & Management. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University.

"In addition to Doug, we are extremely fortunate to have Murray and Kirk join our board and help guide us on our growth path," continued Farquhar. "Murray’s impressive finance background – being CFO of such companies as Adobe Systems, Dolby Labs and LiveOps – will prove invaluable in helping us continue to grow Atlassian into a world-class software company. And Kirk’s extensive background in selling to the enterprise will be a vital resource in helping us to continue to disrupt the traditional enterprise software business model."

"We are committed to the highest standards of corporate governance and welcome the collective wisdom that Doug, Murray and Kirk will bring to our board," Farquhar added.

As EVP and CFO of Dolby Laboratories, Murray Demo was responsible for the company’s finance, investor relations, information technology, business operations, real estate, and facilities organizations.
