KineticD Delivers Online Backup With Windows Certified Open File Driver

For SMBs, ISVs and service providers

KineticD, in cloud backup and recovery services for SMBs, announced that its KineticFAM open file driver has passed compatibility tests and hardware certifications for Windows 7, Vista and XP as well as for Windows Server 2008 R2, 2003 and 2000.

This certification provides SMBs, independent software vendors (ISVs) and service providers with a certified online backup service that backups open or in-use files for legacy applications and non-Microsoft VSS aware applications.

Traditionally, backing up critical business data, such as Outlook .PST (the file that contains email, calendar and contact user data) and QuickBooks .QEW (the backup file that is critical for restoring business accounting files) has been problematic for SMBs and SPs. In order for backup software to capture this data, these types of programs must be closed.

In the past, IT administrators have scheduled backup processes to occur during off-hours when the network and its users were not utilizing the data, thus alleviating the issue of incomplete backups. Today, the growth of devices accessing corporate networks from multiple locations, or at any hour of the day or night, has made this strategy unmanageable for many organizations.

Critical non-standard databases, such as Outlook and QuickBooks, accounting software and legacy applications and databases such as MS Access and MySQL are not VSS-aware, the standard that allows files or databases to be backed up when in use. This lack of functionality leaves many IT managers and SMBs empty-handed in the event of a disaster or system failure.

"Through the KineticFAM API, I’ve been able to fully integrate the open file driver into my own backup client, providing my users with the ability to backup Outlook while it’s open or in use," said Stefan Doerhoefer, president of German software company Priotecs IT GmbH. "I investigated VSS but it wouldn’t allow me to backup Outlook while it was open. KineticFAM solved this issue, and with Windows certification, my solution is more appealing. Now I can assure my customers that we are following the best practices set by Microsoft."

KineticD customers using KineticCloud for PCs and servers and ISVs that have built KineticFAM into their own backup clients have enjoyed this technology for years. Its caching methods protect backups from corruption and keep relational file integrity for mission-critical data stored in databases and email servers.

"Passing Windows hardware certification tests further extends our commitment to providing our customers with the best solution for protecting critical data," said Jamie Brenzel, CEO, KineticD. "By obtaining Microsoft Certification, SMBs and ISVs alike are assured that KineticD products provide them with the confidence of knowing that the software won’t conflict with Windows or other low-level drivers, such as antivirus programs and software firewalls."
