Last April 28th, Mr. Nye was part of a Planetary
Radio
recording session at the National
Air and Space Museum
in Washington D.C.
In the midst of recording before a live audience, power was suddenly
lost to the digital recording device. The recording was unable to
complete and was not showing up on the drive.
The Planetary Society tried to use off-the-shelf hard drive recovery
software but nothing would work.

Upon contacting The Data Rescue Center, the hard drive was analyzed
and it was determined that no current recovery tools would be able to recover
the lost audio files, due to the unique set of circumstances during the
recording session. The recovery engineers worked with
Prosoft Engineering, Inc.‘s software development group to create customized software
that could read the data and reconstruct it in a way that allowed for a
complete recovery.

"Once we did a complete
analysis of The Planetary Society’s hard drive, it was evident that we needed
to create a customized version of our Data Rescue software in order to
reconstruct and recover the data,
" said Brian Crosby, recovery engineer
at The Data Rescue Center. "We
were then able to successfully recover Bill Nye’s audio files within a few
days, giving him and his team the much-needed files in time for their deadline.
"

Nye and his colleagues were thrilled.

"We were told by others, including
the maker of the recorder, that there was no hope. Now, thanks to the Data Rescue Center, we’re
able to share a great show with our audience around the globe,
" says
Nye.

Bill Nye became the CEO of the Planetary Society in 2010. Co-founded by the late Carl Sagan, the
Society is the world’s largest member-supported space interest group. One of its many projects is Planetary Radio,
a popular podcast and public radio series.
