FileTek, Inc., provider of
data management, storage virtualization, and active archive
solutions, announced that The Wistar Institute, in biomedical research institute with special
expertise in cancer research and vaccine development, deployed StorHouse for
Life Sciences to centralize, backup, and protect its critical biomedical
research data.
The Wistar Institute installed StorHouse for Life Sciences at its Philadelphia
location as the central repository for all scientific data generated by its
numerous laboratory and research centers.
Chris Wawak, research systems administrator at the Center for
systems and computational biology at Wistar, commented: "With StorHouse, we are better able to meet
the needs of the researchers at The Wistar Institute. Previously, groups stored
data in many different ways, including on individual USB hard drives, which
meant that the data was not well-protected and secure. StorHouse has helped us
increase the security of our data by centralizing it. We can now assure that
it’s safe. It won’t be lost if someone’s hard disk crashes, or someone walks
away with a USB drive."
StorHouse for Life Sciences is a large-scale, storage virtualization
and data management platform specifically engineered to administer the TBs to PBs
of structured and unstructured fixed content generated by scalable and
dynamic life sciences applications. The product combines industry traditional
and alternative storage devices and open system processors with storage
management, relational database management, and file system interface software
components. No modifications to existing applications are required.
It has many features that support
biomedical research, including native file format backup, virtually unlimited
scalability, sustained performance, built-in technology growth path, blended
backup/archive, and long-term data availability and protection. As such, it is
an enabling technology component in the race to collect, study, link, and
analyze critical medical research data.
"The Wistar Institute is
a prime example of using StorHouse to achieve data assurance and access at the
lowest cost per PB of storage," stated Gary Szukalski, president of
FileTek. "In fact, the tangible
benefit of using StorHouse as a backup system at Wistar is a 239% ROI and a
short 16-month payback period. This high level of ROI is possible in part
because of StorHouse hardware abstraction, ensured data integrity,
architectural flexibility, automated system management, and native file format
backup features."
