Evaluator Group Report On Sepaton DeltaScale

With integration of NetBackup OST and A.I.R.

SEPATON, Inc. announced that the Evaluator Group, Inc. has confirmed through analysis and customer reviews that its DeltaScale disk-based data protection platform with Symantec’s NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) and Auto Image Replication (A.I.R.) software integration provides a scalable solution designed for the data intensive environments of large enterprises and enhances the overall manageability of the NBU environment for storage administrators.

A recently published Evaluator Group report written by John Webster, senior partner, titled, SEPATON and NetBackup 7.1 details the benefits offered by SEPATON’s S2100 data protection platform via its implementation of a plug-in for the OST API as a solution that:

  • can eliminate manual cataloguing when replicating backup data between sites for disaster recover purposes; improve application recovery times by an order of magnitude;
  • address the need in large enterprise environments for a single, scalable data protection platform to control sprawl and escalating costs; and
  • help storage administrators meet stringent performance, RTO and reliability requirements.

"Software vendors are focused on extending their platforms by integrating with the native intelligence in storage devices in order to ease the storage administrator’s burden by improving efficiency, increasing performance and reducing complexity," said Webster. "We believe that SEPATON’s partnership with Symantec around the implementation of OST will allow NBU users to more tightly integrate SEPATON’s S2100 DeltaScale data protection system with Symantec NBU features and functions, thereby enhancing the overall manageability of the NBU environment for storage administrators."

SEPATON Integrates OST with DeltaScale
In the Evaluator Group analysis, the report found that SEPATON’s DeltaScale architecture offers storage administrators a single disk controller image while scaling to capacity and processing ranges that would require storage administrators to acquire multiple, disparate images if competing vendor’s solutions were used.

Specifically, the report found
that this has allowed administrators to:

  • Reduce the operational cost of the site-to-site communications link dedicated to replicated backup data streams
  • Economically extend a centralized data protection umbrella to remote office locations
  • Consolidate/centralize tape infrastructure for archiving
  • Decreases recovery times

SEPATON’s OST A.I.R. Support
Using the SEPATON architecture under the control of Symantec NBU with A.I.R., a storage administrator can set NBU’s Storage Lifecycle Policies to replicate selected, deduplicated images between the NBU Master domains, one at a central site and another at a remote site.

The report found benefits including:

  • The cost of MAN and WAN communications bandwidth for data replication between the central and remote sites can be reduced because deduplicated data is sent over the communications link.
  • Cataloging of backup images at both the central and remote sites occurs automatically, saving storage administrators the need to perform this task manually at the remote site.
  • Automated cataloging can be advantageous when an emergency is declared.
  • RTOs can be improved because catalogs at one site are immediately available to the other.
  • Since the replication is performed asynchronously, the system can process additional backups and other NBU job steps while replication progresses forward.

"SEPATON extends its lead in the OST backup market by offering the first certified implementation of A.I.R. for NetBackup by an independent vendor. The SEPATON S2100 is the only enterprise-class data protection platform that supports the OpenStorage API and Auto Image Replication (A.I.R.) for NetBackup environments today," said Linda Mentzer, VP of product management and marketing, SEPATON. "As the Evaluator Group makes clear, the integration of SEPATON’s enterprise class, DeltaScale  disk-based platform with Symantec’s NetBackup OST and A.I.R. software provide a scalable solution specifically intended for the data protection and disaster recovery challenges of large enterprises."
