Gemini to Exhibit Cloudian Storage Software in Japan
Compliant with Amazon S3 REST API
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on May 3, 2012 at 3:09 pmGemini Mobile Technologies KK (Gemini) will exhibit Cloudian at the 3rd cloud computing Expo in Tokyo.
It is a packaged software product which enables the building of cloud storage systems that are compliant with Amazon S3 REST API.
At the booth, Cloudian customers will share use cases of Cloudian, S3 ecosystem, big data, cloud solutions, next-generation clouds, and M2M. Fourteen companies will present, including Nifty, Rakuten, Aplix, Vodafone, Ericsson, and VARs such as Creationline Inc. and Core Micro Systems Inc.
Background
Big data is a term that was used first by Internet engineers to refer to the simultaneous, sudden rush of various types of data in enormous quantities. While the data items themselves may be small, there are massive amounts of them which need to be processed at high speed simultaneously, such as in the case of Twitter, which processes over 10TB of data per day.
Big data was beyond the scope of assumptions for conventional database technologies and required robust, costly data storage equipment. cloud computing technologies provide solutions for big data with large-scale, distributed, parallel data processing systems using low-cost commodity servers. Cloud technologies are used for many cloud services such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, to name a few.
Amazon S3 is the leading cloud storage service, and its interface (S3 REST API) is public. S3 API has become a standard for cloud storage. Today the growing S3 Ecosystem already has hundreds of services and applications and almost a trillion objects stored.
Worldwide, the S3 Ecosystem is expanding from public cloud services used by the general public into private clouds used inside corporations and group organizations, hybrid public and private clouds used for data backup, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication.
Cloudian is a packaged software product based on big data cloud computing technology, and allows service providers and enterprises to leverage the existing applications and services in the S3 Ecosystem. It has a track record of commercial use for cloud storage services, including Nifty Cloud Storage in Japan. The software product can be also used for enterprise private clouds and hybrid clouds.

Characteristics of Cloudian
- Compliant with S3 REST API: There are hundreds of web services, applications, appliances, tools, and others that use S3 REST API, including Dropbox, a file sharing service. They form a growing S3 ecosystem that is becoming a standard. Cloudian users can use these S3 REST API-based applications and other ecosystem products on an as-is basis.
- Scalable, flexible, reliable and available: Cloudian is scalable and flexible to allow cloud service providers and enterprises to economically increase a storable data size of clusters by adding commodity IA servers to cope with the growing volume of data needing to be stored. It is also reliable and available via multiple data centers (multi-data center feature) which is effective for disaster recovery, automatic data replication on multiple servers, and automatic recovery and rebalancing upon server failures. It is based on NOSQL database technology to implement these features. In addition, HyperStore, a technology developed by Gemini, is used to improve performance and efficient use of hard disks.
A trial version of Cloudian is offered to free of charge for thirty days. Nearly 100 companies globally have applied for a trial to date.
