Top 2011 NAS Vendors: EMC in Sales, Netgear in Units

Worldwide vendor revenues for the NAS and unified storage market increased 32.5% in 2011 compared with 2010, reaching $6.8 billion. The estimated pure NAS market grew 21.5% to $4.5 billion.

In this sector, you have hardware configurations from only several hundreds to more than one millions of dollars. That’s why Gartner has segmented the market in three categories: all of them, less than $25,000 – total at $1.2 billion growing 11.7% Y/Y – and than $5,000 – total at $462 million decreasing 5% Y/Y.

EMC is the leader in global revenues, not too far from NetApp. This latter is ≠1 in the second mid-range category and Netgear in low-end third one. EMC is the most growing firm in sales from 2010 to 2011 with 89.9% in front of Netgear with 84.7%. Oracle Sun has a yearly negative growth of 8.0%.

As expected, ranking by units shipped in 2011 is someone different. Netgear occupies the top position with 16.4% market share followed by Qnap (13.8%), Synology (13.4%) and Buffalo Technology (12.9%). EMC is at the fifth place with 11.5%, followed by NetApp and HP.
