A contractor has lost computer storage devices containing personal identity information for more than 800,000 individuals who are on file with the child support system, state officials said Thursday. The devices apparently were lost while in transit from Colorado to California, and there is no indication that they are in criminal hands. Still, the California Department of Child Support Services has sent letters to everyone affected, recommending that they be on the lookout for credit card fraud or identity theft.
