QLogic 10GbE CNAs Shipping for Dell PowerEdge 12th Generation Servers
With simultaneous multiprotocol processing and switch independent partitioning
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 15, 2012 at 2:55 pmQLogic Corp. announced that its 8200 Series 10GbE converged network adapters (CNAs) are shipping with new Dell Inc.‘s PowerEdge12th generation servers, based on the next generation Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family.
QLogic and Dell are driving next-generation server I/O virtualization with flexible networking technologies including simultaneous multiprotocol processing and Switch Independent Partitioning.
The QLogic 8200 Series is available as part of the Dell PowerEdge Select Network Adapter family as well as in PCIe and mezzanine formats for PowerEdge rack, tower and blade servers. It complements the higher compute density and increased numbers of I/O operations that can be generated by the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600-based servers and addresses the complex requirements of virtualized data centers, cloud service providers and the converged enterprise.
The Switch Independent Partitioning feature enables each physical port to be logically divided into four logical ports with flexible allocation of 10GbE bandwidth. As a result, one CNA is viewed by the server operating system as a flexible mix of standalone NICs, FCoE adapters, and iSCSI adapters, with the ability to allocate guaranteed bandwidth to each virtual adapter. This eliminates the cost of installing multiple, physical networking and storage adapters that are dedicated to specific server applications or other tasks. Since it is switch agnostic, it is not necessary to pair an 8200 Series adapter with any specific 10GbE switch model to enable partitioning.
"QLogic has been a key partner in the execution of Dell’s converged infrastructure strategy, providing 10GbE CNA adapters with rich, unique features that address the demands of virtualized and cloud environments," said Amit Vashi, vice president, marketing, Host Solutions Group, QLogic. "Our 8200 Series maximizes customers’ investments in Dell PowerEdge 12th generation servers through our suite of rich, flexible technologies including simultaneous data and storage networking over 10GbE Ethernet, and offload of all FCoE and iSCSI protocol processing, which frees up server CPU cycles to enable faster application performance."
"QLogic 8200 Series adapters lower the total cost of ownership for PowerEdge customers by enabling SAN and LAN convergence, reducing cabling, power, cooling and management costs – and a great example of how we’ve been able to do that is with our Force10 S4810," said Brian Payne, executive director of Dell PowerEdge Platform Marketing. "The 8200 Series enables valuable investment protection by working seamlessly with existing FC Storage, switches and management utilities while also offering built-in capability to migrate to converged infrastructure on 10Gbit Ethernet."
QLogic 8200 Series
By delivering 10GbE performance with low CPU utilization, the QLogic 8200 Series excels in virtualized environments, utilizing flexible networking technologies including:
- Concurrent protocol processing services including FCoE, TCP/IP and iSCSI
- Multiple protocol offload services
- Switch Independent Partitioning
QLogic 8200 Series 10GbE adapters offer low CPU utilization, freeing up server cycles for critical applications and the increased mobility of VMs. They are interoperable with all existing LAN, NAS and SAN environments and support nearly every hypervisor, operating system and boot environment. The entire QLogic 8200 Series portfolio is integrated in Dell System Management tools such as Dell Lifecycle Controller. Users can also manage the portfolio using the QConvergeConsole, which provides multi-platform, single-pane-of-glass management of FCoE, iSCSI and TCP/IP protocols for ease-of-administration and converged network deployment.
QLogic 8200 Series adapters are available on the new Dell PowerEdge 12th generation servers.
