Realizing Benefits of De-Dupe and Compression

Storage Strategies NOW (SSG-NOW), a storage analysis and research organization, released the findings of a report and survey on data reduction technologies.

Titled, Data Reduction: Realizing the Benefits of Deduplication and Compression, the report defines the market for data reduction appliances and software, outlines its growth and details how businesses are adopting and deploying data reduction for reducing the amount of primary and secondary storage stored.

The report also includes the results of an IT Professionals Adoption Survey, co-sponsored by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), which presents information on how end-users have deployed data reduction technologies and what type of data they are deduplicating and compressing.

Key findings of the report and survey are:

• Over 69% of respondents are using data reduction technologies to reduce the amount of data they store;
• 39% have implemented deduplication and compression, 14% have implemented deduplication only and 23% are using data compression only; and,
• Over 35% of the respondents are familiar with the SNIA Data Protection and Capacity Optimization Committee, which educates IT Professionals on data protection and efficient data storage technologies and provides technical whitepapers for best practices and implementation considerations.
