Arkeia Introduces vmOneStep Virtual Appliance for VMware

Agentless backup solution starting at $2,000

Arkeia Software, Inc. announced the vmOneStep virtual appliance for VMware, a backup solution for VMware hypervisors packaged as a simple to install single virtual machine, ready for deployment on any VMware vSphere, ESXi, or ESX hypervisor.

vmOneStep virtual appliance for VMware offers backup and recovery support for VMware vSphere platforms, including vCenter, ESX, and ESXi. It auto-discovers, auto-includes, and auto-protects all virtual machines across multiple hypervisors in a single backup schedule. As an agentless backup solution for the entire organization, it supports VMware, but also Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer, as well as more than 200 physical platforms.

Deployment in One Step
"By packaging vmOneStep as a virtual appliance Arkeia raises the ease-of-use bar in the virtual server backup market," said Howard Marks, founder and chief scientist at Deep Storage. "Installing the leading VM backup solutions requires an administrator to clone an operating system template, look up the recommended configuration for memory and vCPUs, join the server to the domain, and then install the backup application. Once all that’s done they have another server to patch and maintain. With vmOneStep it’s just the one step of deploying the virtual appliance."

Distributed as a single Open Virtualization Format (OVF) image, the virtual appliance provides image-level backups of live virtual machines using VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP). Arkeia takes advantage of VMware’s Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for incremental and differential backups and guaranteed point-in-time recoveries of virtual machines. File-level restore is available for both Windows and Linux virtual machines, including LVM (Logical Volume Manager) support.

The vmOneStep virtual appliance supports direct backup to disk and tape, and replicates backup sets to local media as well as to public or private clouds, for secure off-site storage.

Other capabilities managed through
the virtual appliance’s web-based user interface,
include:

  • Works with VMware’s Changed Block Tracking (CBT) to further reduce capacity and network traffic for faster backups
  • vCenter integration simplifies management of backup and recovery operations for environments with multiple physical hosts
  • vApp support backs up and restores groups of VMs working together, as well as granular restore on a per-VM basis
  • Multiple transport methods deliver best performance in LAN-free backups over the SAN, over the virtual LAN, or via SCSI hot-adds
  • Supports Raw Device Mapping (RDM) for backups of remote block storage devices, including incremental backups using CBT when in virtual compatibility mode
  • Supports hypervisor redirection and choice of datacenter/folder, cluster/host, resource pool, or datastore destinations to simplify restores

Availability and Pricing
The Arkeia vmOneStep virtual appliance for VMware is available. Prices start at $2,000 for an unlimited number of virtual machines on one physical server (i.e. hypervisor) with any number of CPUs and CPU cores. Prices include one year of maintenance updates/upgrades and unlimited support access.
