Start-Up Infineta Receives Patent for De-Dupe

For WAN optimization but can be apply to storage

Infineta Systems, provider of WAN optimization systems for big traffic workflows, has received a patent (U.S. No. 8,078,593) for its deduplication technology from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The patent captures Infineta’s research towards a massively parallel dedupe algorithm that can be implemented with significantly less computational complexity compared to the prior art while making optimal use of available I/O bandwidth. The patented technology serves as the basis for Infineta’s WAN optimization product, the Data Mobility Switch (DMS).

"WAN-based replication of large data sets is forcing WAN optimization data rates to climb into the 10s of gigabits/sec," said Joe Skorupa, Research VP Data Center Convergence at Gartner. "As a result, deduplication algorithms that cost-effectively scale to very high data rates will be critical to enable business continuity/disaster recovery."

Infineta’s newly awarded patent represents a breakthrough in WAN optimization technology for big traffic workflows that traverse enterprise WAN networks. With enterprise data sets reaching aggregate volumes in the 100s of terabytes to petabytes, and storage needs doubling every year, there is a dire need for scalable WAN optimization solutions to accelerate the large volumes of data being transferred between data centers.

Unlike WAN optimization solutions built using previously-patented dedupe algorithms, Infineta’s solutions, enabled by its new patent, can reduce traffic footprints at multi-gigabit speeds while incurring only microseconds of dedupe processing latency. While Infineta is focused on WAN optimization for big traffic, its speed dedupe technology also has possible applications in other market segments, such as inline and post-processing dedupe for storage systems.

"We are very proud to have been awarded this game-changing new patent, which validates our multi-year research effort and the uniqueness of our approach to deduplication," stated K.V.S. Ramarao, Ph.D., CTO and co-founder of Infineta Systems. "Our patent disrupts the status quo and breaks the longstanding deadlock other WAN opt vendors have had on dedupe technology, while raising the bar for new solutions and opening doors to new markets beyond WAN optimization."

According to In Sik Rhee, general partner at Rembrandt Venture Partners and Infineta Board member, "Infineta applied for this patent in 2009 with a vision for how this new deduplication technology would transform the entire WAN optimization market. As the first approved patent out of several more that are pending for Infineta, it solidifies Infineta’s technology leadership and underscores its ability to truly meet the requirements of its growing list of enterprise customers."
