Syncdocs Turns Google Docs Into Online Storage Drive

By combining features of Google Docs and Dropbox

Syncdocs is a new service that brings Google Docs to the desktop, with Dropbox-like file sync.

Google Apps and Docs is an online office suite. However, until now, there was no way to keep online files synchronized with local copies. A new product, Syncdocs, turns Google Docs into a synced network storage drive. Syncdocs keeps PC folders in sync with Google Docs accounts.

Local files are backed up online and accessible anywhere. And, in case of a network outage, online files are also backed up locally. This means access to Google data offline. When the network is available again, any changes are synced back.

Syncdocs can also keep multiple PCs in sync via Google. For example, files on an office PC can be automatically synced with a netbook. This eliminates using USB memory sticks to move data around. The Google drive is also easy to use; Syncdocs maps Google Docs as a network G drive, and any files put on this drive are copied to Google and all other synced PCs.

"Our customers find Syncdocs makes the transition to the cloud easier," says Donald Recsei, product manager of Syncdocs. "You can keep all documents in sync, and access them from your PC or on-the-go from your mobile device. Your files just stay up-to-date automatically."

In addition to providing sync and online backup, Syncdocs makes Google Docs available from the user’s Windows desktop. This means that Microsoft Office is no longer necessary to create or share Word, Powerpoint or Excel files. Users get the power of Google’s cloud office suite from their PC desktop.

This combination of Google Documents and Syncdocs lets users get Chromebook-type functionality from the familiar Windows desktop.

The beta version of Syncdocs was recently named one of PCWorld’s top 100 products of 2011.

The full version of Syncdocs is a free download, users are only charged when syncing a large number of files. Sync unlimited files and PCs costs $19.95 a year.
