Toshiba Stopped Manufacturing HDDs in Thailand

Flood water over one meter high, access of factory prohibited

On October 21, Toshiba Corp. informs of the impact of intermittent flooding in north central Thailand on its manufacturing operations.

Concerning Toshiba Storage Device (Thailand), Co., Ltd., where HDD are manufactured and located in Navanakorn Industrial Estate Zone, Pathumthani, the company stated:

  • Damage status: Flood water is over one meter high in the factory building, and the facilities are damaged. Electricity in the industrial zone has been cut. No employees have been injured, as access to the industrial zone is prohibited at the order of the Thai government.
  • Measures: We are preparing alternative production at other factories. We will do all we can to minimize the impact on production.
  • Operation: All the employees have been evacuated from the industrial zone, at the order of the Thai government. The factory closure has been extended to October 24 at earliest. Operation after October 25 will be decided according to the situation.

Toshiba has two others HDD plants in the Philippines, a huge one in Binan Laguna and a smaller one in Calamba Laguna following the acquisition of Fujitsu HDD business in October 2009, as well as apparently a fourth one in Shenzhen, China.
