Bangalore’s Start-Up QUADStor Debuts Storage Virtualization Software
With de-dupe and thin provisioning, developed for the FreeBSD OS
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 21, 2011 at 2:49 pmQUADStor Systems announces availability of its next generation storage solution aimed at reducing data storage costs within data centers.
With features such as data deduplication, thin provisioning and features aimed at virtualized environments, QUADStor enables enterprises to reduce IT budgets and decrease storage complexities. An added benefit to end users is that QUADStor’s solution is free. Developed for the FreeBSD operating system and with a port for the Linux operating system in the pipeline, QUADStor’s solution can be deployed on commodity hardware.
"We are very excited with the release of our storage virtualization software," said Shivaram Upadhyaula, Founder of QUADStor Systems. "Although still in beta, the software solution has shown great promise and we are working even harder to bring out the production release."
The production release is expected before the end of 2011.
Shivaram Upadhyayula answers
a few questions about QUADStor.
What are the benefits of QUADStor?
The biggest benefit is storage efficiency. Data deduplication and compression drastically reduce storage utilization. In fact with archival data, utilization can be reduced by as much as 90% and by about 40% with primary data. Data reduction is done on the fly, so redundant data is never stored. Other benefits are thin provisioning which allows to plan capacity on demand, integration with virtual environments with features such as vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI), unified storage access etc.
Why is QUADStor’s solution free?
The business model we follow is to provide our solutions for free to the end user. This would allow any interested customer to deploy our solutions on commodity hardware. At the same time we try to work out solutions for OEMs which would integrate ours with their offerings. Customers of our OEMs will enjoy the benefits of our solutions with our OEMs own offerings.
Are you planning to open-source your solutions?
Its free but not open-source yet. But thoughts and efforts are in the open-source direction. QUADStor Systems has contributed to the open-source community and will do so in the future.
