This data warehouse appliance is an integrated system that delivers double the performance and triple the data capacity of its predecessor. The new Data Warehouse Appliance will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

It extends Teradata’s appliance market by offering customers performance and a foundation for a range of powerful analytics. The business value of Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2690 as an analytics platform has contributed to the rapid customer adoption.

"The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance is a proven powerhouse providing a faster, easier, and greener analytic engine for a wide variety of demanding business intelligence tasks," said Ed White, general manager, Teradata Appliances, Teradata Corporation. "In less than three years, the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance business has experienced brisk growth with hundreds of customers now running their analytics on Teradata appliances. The deployment by customers and their confidence in the appliances’ capabilities and reliability has pushed Teradata into a market-leading position."

To meet the diverse needs of customers, the appliance delivers an integrated analytic platform that can be configured from as few as two TB up to 315TB of uncompressed user data per cabinet. The performance metrics are impressive, scanning data at more than 38GB/s per cabinet.

Compression Engines Drive Performance
The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance has compression technology that provides performance and increases the amount of data that can be stored.

"Teradata is the first to efficiently deploy block-level compression without impacting our customers’ performance, and we automated the entire process, making it effortless for customers. This unmatched advancement makes the Teradata appliance even easier to use," said White.

The compression engine provides a compression technique which operates at the data storage block level to deliver space savings. It is automatically set, offering hands-off administration and management – a customer can turn the machine on, start loading data, and the new data will be compressed. The default compression settings are optimized for system performance. With the up-coming Teradata Database 14, the new Data Warehouse Appliance will take advantage of Teradata Columnar, which will deliver incremental levels of performance and compression.

‘Green’ reduces operating expense
The ‘Green’ savings provided by the Data Warehouse Appliance 2690 reaches up to 60 percent less energy and 50 percent less floor space for the same capability as the previous generation. Teradata achieved these savings by internal streamlining of all system management functions through virtualization technology and a compression engine that provides more performance and data storage on a cabinet-to-cabinet level when compared to the previous generation. The ‘Green’ or sustainability benefits of the Teradata system have become a critical factor, since it is understood that the costs for data center power, cooling, and floor space will soon outpace the cost of the equipment in the data center.

Appliances meet customers’ demands
Teradata appliances meet the diverse business intelligence needs of customers. The appliances are optimized to perform tasks ranging from test and development to serving as a small departmental data mart, and all the way up to an integrated data warehouse. The functions of the appliance have changed as data warehouses have evolved into mission-critical corporate resources, and the volume and type of data that requires analysis has exploded.

Examples of how companies are employing
Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance include:

  • A major U.S. entertainment company uses a Data Warehouse Appliance to consolidate multiple data marts and applications onto a single platform, which simplifies their infrastructure and reduces operational costs.
  • A major fast food service chain sells thousands of gift cards for use in its restaurants located in multiple states. However, the cards are not immediately redeemed by consumers. To improve marketing programs, the company relies upon the Data Warehouse Appliance to better understand how consumers are using the cards. In addition, the company is able to determine how much of the balance on each card is unspent every quarter, which impacts quarterly financial reporting.
  • A popular home goods retailer relies upon its Data Warehouse Appliance to run Aprimo Demand Chain Manager to monitor inventory, forecast consumer demand and synchronize that inventory to match demand. The synchronization ensures product availability, which improves customer satisfaction while reducing expenses and improving productivity.

Each Data Warehouse Appliance is a solution – all processors, storage disks, and networking are pre-packaged into a base cabinet and delivered ready to run, which enables companies to deploy and realize business value from their investment.

Investment protection
This platform is the only appliance in the industry that can co-reside with the previous generation platform as a single system, and deliver performance from all elements. This co-residence capability provides flexible growth options, while protecting the technology investment.

Integrated analytics foundation
The Data Warehouse Appliance provides an environment that enables integrated analytics with fast parallel processing, scalability for processing massive volumes of data, and rich in-database analytic capabilities. Teradata provides a set of integrated analytics that leverage the speed of the database engine, while eliminating the time-consuming and costly task of data movement. The analytics include data exploration, geospatial, temporal, predictive, emerging open source technology such as ‘R’ and GeoServer. In addition, Teradata has collaborated with industry partners to provide big data analytics and business intelligence with optimized in-database integrations.
